How do I use the Concussion Tools?

SportSmart includes the Head Injury Tool to identify suspected concussions and the Concussion Recovery Tool to help get players back to sport.

SportSmart Head Injury Tool

The SportSmart Head Injury Tool has been built to reflect the 2023 UK Concussion Guidelines for Grassroots Sport. The HIT will help you assess if someone is concussed pitch-side, giving you the confidence to respond to, and effectively manage, concussions.

The tool can be accessed from the homepage of the SportSmart app, walking through the three stages to identify Red Flags (which require immediate medical attention) or Signs or Symptoms.

Any player that has a Red Flag, Sign or Symptom will need to start a graduated return to activity and sport. The Head Injury Tool will automatically trigger the Concussion Recovery Tool and start the six stage process.

Concussion Recovery Tool

The Concussion Recovery Tool has been built to help players get back to sport after a concussion. It will support the staff and the player (and their parent/carer) know what to do at each stage, allow the player to take a self assessment to self manage their progression. The tool keeps everyone up to date and ensures that they don't return too early whilst prompting progress which can aid recovery.

Once the player has completed the sixth stage they will automatically be returned to play and the form will be completed.

MySportSmart: Players (or their parents/carers if under 18) can access the tool through the MySportSmart app. Make sure you've sent out the invitations so they can get set up.

If you haven't done this you can find out how here.
